Uber was fined EUR 10 million for not giving European drivers enough information about their data storage and making it hard for them to access their data. The Dutch data authority found that the company did not clearly explain where drivers' data was kept or how long it would be stored. This case serves as a reminder for companies to be transparent about data practices.

What happened

Uber failed to provide clear information about the storage period of drivers' data and made it difficult for them to request access.

Who was affected

Around 120,000 drivers working for Uber in Europe whose data was not adequately protected or explained.

What the authority found

The Dutch DPA found that Uber violated multiple articles of GDPR by not providing sufficient information and making access requests difficult.

Why this matters

This fine shows that companies must be transparent about their data practices and accessible to users. Other businesses should review their data access processes to ensure compliance.

Full Legal Summary
Detailed

The Dutch DPA has fined Uber Technologies Inc. and Uber B.V. EUR 10 million for failing to provide sufficient information about the storage period of European drivers' data and the countries outside of the EU to which the data was transferred. The DPA also found that Uber made it unnecessarily difficult for drivers to request access to their data. Although there was a digital form in the app that drivers could use to request access, it was not placed in an easily accessible position. In addition, Uber did not respond to the requests of data subjects in a comprehensible manner. In determining the amount of the fine, the DPA took into account the size of the company and the severity and scope of the infringements. At the time of Uber's infringements, around 120,000 drivers were working for Uber in Europe.
